In 1975, the Jones family (Madelyn, Nelson, and their children Stephanie, Jason, and Matthew) started a business on Rio Bravo and 2^nd Street called Common Market.  At the time, it was a place where craftspeople could come to sell their crafts, but it quickly evolved as it responded to customers and their needs. 

In 1983, customer requests led to the addition of First Communion dresses to the eclectic selection of manufactured and handmade gifts and clothing already in the store.  Once the First Communion dresses were available, customer requests for other items began to drive Common Market further into the special occasion business.  The family added more First Communion, Christening, suits for boys, and eventually wedding accessories like glasses and knives.  A selection of Mothers dresses and second wedding dresses also began to grow from Common Market’s unique women’s clothing lines.

Another move in 1998 took Common Market to the Westside and Cottonwood Mall.  The growing Westside of Albuquerque allowed Common Market to continue to expand its selection until 2003 when Madelyn, Stephanie, and Matthew decided to add bridal gowns, bridesmaids dresses, and tuxedos and transform Common Market for good.

In 2004, Stephanie, Jason, and Matthew opened Ann Matthews on Alameda and Coors as a full service Bridal and special occasion store.  Common Market continued to operate as a sister store to Ann Matthews in Cottonwood adding the final piece of the puzzle, prom dresses, to the Ann Matthews/Common Market inventory.  In 2007, Ann Matthews purchased Common Market and in 2008 all of Common Market’s inventory was transferred to Ann Matthews making it a truly full service special occasion store with one of the largest selections in New Mexico.
